CLASSICS WITH A TWIST

The Prince and The Pauper

Script by Mila Johansen
Adapted for the stage from Mark Twain’s classic
48 characters - lots of doubling possible - extras can be added easily

The Prince and the Pauper is one of the most famous stories of all time and one of the most inspiring tales of human nature. It is set in 16th Century England and focuses on the character of Prince Edward, Henry VIII’s only son. Edward is thrown out into the rough, barbaric streets of London and rapidly learns how to survive. He quickly learns some valuable principles and is exposed first-hand to the life of the people that he will someday rule. Meanwhile, in the Palace, Tom Canty, much to his dismay, is taken for the prince--a look-alike.

What is so fascinating about this script is that it introduces three future Queens as young girls and gives us a glimpse of who they will become. They are Mary and Elizabeth, both daughters of Henry VII, and Lady Jane Grey. This script is full-bodied entertainment for audiences and casts of all ages. Because of its historically correct portrayal of the 16th Century, it is an excellent companion for Renaissance studies within the classroom.
